HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A tragic turn of events has struck the Alabama A&M football community with the recent passing of linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. The university confirmed that Burnett, who sustained a head injury during a football game against Alabama State on October 26, died on Tuesday evening, just a month following the incident.
Burnett, a redshirt freshman originally from Lakewood, California, had joined Alabama A&M’s team over the summer after previously playing at Grambling State. His commitment to the sport and to his team left a lasting impact on those around him.
In a heartfelt statement released on Wednesday, Alabama A&M’s athletic director Dr. Paul A. Bryant expressed the profound sorrow felt within the Bulldog family. “Today, our Bulldog family is heartbroken by the loss of Medrick Burnett Jr. Medrick was more than an exceptional athlete; he was a remarkable young man whose positive energy, leadership, and compassion left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him,” Bryant wrote. He also conveyed gratitude for Burnett’s family, acknowledging their resilience during this incredibly difficult time.
Throughout the season, Burnett participated in seven games, where he recorded five tackles, including three in a game against Austin Peay. His contributions on the field showcased his dedication, but his spirit off the field endeared him to teammates and coaches alike.
This unfortunate incident highlights the risks associated with contact sports and the importance of support networks for athletes. As the Alabama A&M community grieves, they remember Burnett not only for his skills as a player but for the kindness and positivity he brought into the lives of those around him.
