Aaron Rodgers is in good health and will take the field as the starting quarterback for the New York Jets for as long as he can maintain that condition.
Interim coach Jeff Ulbrich mentioned on Wednesday that the quarterback returned from their bye week looking physically rejuvenated and eager to play.
“Definitely, as long as he’s healthy, my plan is to play him,” Ulbrich expressed. “I know he wants to be out there as well.”
Rodgers, who is approaching his 41st birthday on Monday, has faced several injuries to his left leg, which include a sore knee, a sprained ankle, and a troublesome hamstring. This comes after recovering from a torn Achilles tendon in the same leg that limited him to only four snaps last season.
“He’s feeling better today than he has for quite a while now,” Ulbrich remarked. “From my discussions with him over the past several weeks, he assured me that today he feels healthier than he has during that period.”
Rodgers mirrored this sentiment during his weekly spot on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday when he stated that he “feels good.”
Though he is still weighing his options about playing football next season, Rodgers has indicated that if he returns, he would prefer to do so with the Jets. “I came here to win here, so I’m not jumping off ship,” he said, refuting a recent claim that he wanted to play in 2025 for a different team. “I don’t even know if I want to play yet, but New York would be my first option.”
Despite having a challenging season statistically, his leg injuries have significantly impacted his performance. However, there is hope for improvement as they prepare to face Seattle on Sunday.
“I’m really looking forward to getting him involved in various plays, whether it’s the keepers, the boots, or a bit more quarterback movement,” Ulbrich said. “We want to capitalize on the skills he has displayed at a Hall of Fame level throughout his career. I’m excited to see a healthier version of Aaron out there.”
There had been some discussion about whether the Jets, currently sitting at 3-8 and nearing mathematical elimination from the playoffs, might consider sitting Rodgers in favor of Tyrod Taylor due to the uncertainty around his future.
“He is a very prideful person,” Ulbrich added. “He wants to finish this season strong and to celebrate the team we have, leaving the season on a positive note.”
