WASHINGTON — The Biden administration is encouraging Ukraine to promptly enhance its military capabilities by initiating draft measures and modifying its mobilization laws to permit the conscription of individuals as young as 18 years old.
A high-ranking official from the Biden administration, who wished to remain anonymous while discussing sensitive consultations, indicated on Wednesday that the Democratic administration is advocating for a reduction in the mobilization age from 25 to 18 years old. This adjustment aims to broaden the pool of eligible young men who can serve and bolster Ukraine’s forces as the country continues its nearly three-year struggle against Russia.
Since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the White House has committed over $56 billion in security aid to Kyiv and intends to provide even more before President Biden’s term concludes in the coming months.
However, time is of the essence, and the Biden administration is becoming more resolute in its belief that, while Ukraine has sufficient weaponry, it must now significantly ramp up troop numbers to effectively contend with Russian forces.
According to the official, Ukraine estimates that it requires an additional 160,000 troops; however, the U.S. believes that the actual number might be even higher.
