FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Luis Suarez will remain a key player for Inter Miami for at least another year, as he has officially signed a contract extension with the club, the team revealed on Wednesday.
The financial aspects of the new contract have not been made public. In his debut season with Inter Miami, Suarez earned $1.5 million while impressively netting 20 goals in Major League Soccer play, tying him with Lionel Messi as the team’s leading scorer. Across all competitions, he recorded a total of 25 goals, showcasing his contributions to the team’s attacking prowess.
“I am very happy and excited to be continuing here for another year,” Suarez expressed in comments shared by the team. “I appreciate the connection we have with the fanbase, which feels like family to us. We hope to bring even more joy to them next year.”
Inter Miami had a remarkable season, achieving Major League Soccer records for points at 74 and a winning percentage of .765. The club finished with an impressive 22 wins, 4 losses, and 8 draws, earning the Supporters Shield. However, their playoff journey was cut short when they were eliminated in the first round by Atlanta United in a best-of-three series.
By extending Suarez’s contract, who will turn 38 in January, Inter Miami ensures that its core group of talented players with Barcelona backgrounds remains intact. Suarez joins Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba in Miami, all of whom previously played together at the renowned Barcelona club. The newly appointed head coach of Inter Miami, Javier Mascherano, also shares a history with this talented quartet from their time at Barcelona.
Raul Sanllehi, president of football operations at Inter Miami, praised Suarez’s impact, stating, “In 2024, Luis has brought all the qualities that mark him as one of the greatest strikers ever to our team. He has maintained an elite performance level and we are thrilled to see this continue next season. Not only was Luis our top scorer, but he also played a crucial leadership role within the group.”
Suarez has a rich history of representing Uruguay in four consecutive World Cups, alongside notable stints at clubs like Liverpool and Atletico Madrid. His career includes numerous accolades, such as being named Dutch Player of the Year, earning the FIFA Club World Cup Golden Ball, and being recognized as the Premier League Player of the Season as well as a World Cup All-Star.
