A commercial division of the Major League Baseball Players Association has successfully negotiated a licensing agreement with FanDuel, following the decision to withdraw a lawsuit against the betting company.
On Tuesday, MLB Players Inc. announced that it has entered into a non-exclusive product and marketing licensing agreement with FanDuel Sportsbook, in collaboration with OneTeam Partners, a commercial ally of the union.
The legal dispute began when MLB Players filed a lawsuit against FanDuel and Underdog Sports in New York Supreme Court on September 16, claiming that the companies misused players’ names, images, and likenesses without proper authorization.
The case was later transferred to U.S. District Court in Manhattan on October 18. On November 19, both MLB and FanDuel filed a notice of voluntary dismissal which was sanctioned by U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams; however, the ongoing case against Underdog remains unresolved.
Union leader Tony Clark commented in a statement that this licensing agreement enhances their current revenue avenues within this emerging sector.
In addition to this case, another lawsuit filed on the same day against DraftKings Inc. and Bet365 Group Ltd. is still active in federal court in Philadelphia.
