Tanzania building collapse rescue operation concludes with death toll reaching 29

Rescue efforts following the recent building collapse in Tanzania’s largest city, Dar Es Salaam, have officially concluded after a span of 10 days, as confirmed by a government representative on Tuesday. The tragic incident has now resulted in a confirmed total of 29 fatalities.

Authorities have detained the owner of the collapsed structure located in the Kariakoo district, a bustling hub for traders. The building fell on November 16, leading to an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disaster, according to spokesperson Thobias Makoba.

Despite the unfortunate loss of life, more than 80 individuals were successfully rescued from the four-story establishment, which housed numerous shops serving the local community.

In light of the incident, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has mandated a comprehensive inspection of all buildings in the vicinity. Since the searches were concluded, many businesses in the area have resumed operations.

Building collapses are a frequent occurrence during the rainy season in East Africa, primarily attributed to substandard construction practices that raise significant safety concerns.
