LONDON — After an impressive reign as the world’s oldest man, John Alfred Tinniswood passed away at the age of 112 in a care facility in northwest England, close to his birthplace in Liverpool. His family confirmed his death, which occurred nearly nine months after he celebrated his record-holding birthday on August 26, 1912.

Tinniswood credited his remarkable longevity to “pure luck,” noting that life can be unpredictable in terms of duration. During his interview with Guinness World Records when he was recognized as the oldest man in April, he reflected on the inevitability of life’s length: “You either live long or you live short, and you can’t do much about it.”

Despite his natural outlook on life, he believed in maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Tinniswood, a retired accountant and great-grandfather, shared that he sought moderation in all aspects of life. He never smoked, drank infrequently, and adhered to any strict diet, with the exception of indulging in fish and chips every Friday. He advised against excess, stating, “If you drink too much or you eat too much or you walk too much — if you do too much of anything — you’re going to suffer eventually.”

Born shortly after the Titanic disaster, Tinniswood witnessed significant historical events, including the two world wars. He served in the British Army Pay Corps during World War II and was 111 years old when he claimed the title of the world’s oldest man following the passing of Juan Vicente Pérez, who lived to be 114.

As to who will assume the title following Tinniswood’s passing, Guinness World Records has yet to announce a successor. He leaves behind a loving family, including his daughter Susan, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. His beloved wife Blodwen, to whom he was married for 44 years, passed away in 1986.

When asked how he felt about reaching the age of 112, Tinniswood maintained a calm perspective, remarking, “I don’t feel that age, I don’t get excited over it. That’s probably why I’ve reached it.”

Currently, the title of the oldest living woman, and indeed the oldest living person, belongs to 116-year-old Tomiko Itooka from Japan.
