NEW YORK — The Detroit Red Wings overcame a two-goal deficit to secure a 4-2 victory against the New York Islanders on Monday night, powered by a late surge in the third period.
Lucas Raymond netted the decisive goal, propelling the Red Wings ahead as they built on the goals from Dylan Larkin and Moritz Seider, with Alex Lyon making 28 crucial saves throughout the match. Simon Edvinsson also contributed by scoring an empty-net goal in the closing moments.
The Islanders, who previously held a 2-1 advantage after two periods, saw goals from Anders Lee and Kyle Palmieri. Goaltender Semyon Varlamov recorded 17 saves, but his team suffered their fourth loss in the last five games, with a record of 1-3-1 in that span.
Midway through the third period, Larkin leveled the game at 2-2 by deftly maneuvering around the crease, firing a wrist shot past Varlamov. Just over two minutes later, Raymond redirected a shot from Edvinsson into the net, giving Detroit a lead they would not relinquish.
Palmieri had initially given the Islanders their second goal of the night, marking his 10th of the season at 7:42 in the second period, which temporarily lifted New York to a 2-1 lead.
In noteworthy performances, Seider, who had gone 16 games without scoring, finally broke his streak in the second period. The defenseman had signed a significant seven-year deal worth $59.85 million back in September, averaging $8.55 million annually.
The Islanders have struggled to maintain leads, notably failing to secure wins in the third period four times in their last five games.
A key moment in the match occurred when Red Wings forward Christian Fischer successfully blocked a powerful slap shot from Noah Dobson during the final minute when the Islanders had an extra attacker on the ice. Despite pulling their goalie for the added skater with three minutes left, New York was unable to capitalize and find the back of the net.
Statistically, the Islanders entered the contest with a penalty kill rate below 50% at home but managed to fend off all three of Detroit’s power-play opportunities, despite the Red Wings boasting a top-10 power-play unit.
Looking ahead, the Red Wings are set to host the Calgary Flames, while the Islanders will welcome the Boston Bruins, both games slated for Wednesday night.
