Trump vows to enact extensive new tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China during his first day as president

NEW YORK — President-elect Donald Trump is considering the implementation of significant tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China shortly after he assumes the presidency, as part of his strategy to address illegal immigration and drug issues.

In a series of updates shared on his Truth Social platform on Monday evening, Trump announced his plans, stating, “On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to impose a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States from Mexico and Canada.”

Trump emphasized that these tariffs would remain until he sees a halt to the influx of drugs, particularly fentanyl, and the flow of illegal immigrants, asserting that this situation constitutes an “Invasion of our Country!”

Additionally, he indicated that he would impose a further 10% tariff on Chinese imports, which would be in addition to any existing tariffs, in response to concerns related to drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl.

At this point, it is uncertain whether Trump will carry out these threats or if they serve merely as a tactical maneuver before he officially takes office in the upcoming year.
