ALLEN PARK, Mich. — The Detroit Lions have displayed significant confidence, inspired by coach Dan Campbell, following an impressive 10-1 start to the season. This confidence is evident whether they are competing at home in Ford Field or away from it. Their most recent triumph came with a solid 24-6 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
The Lions have now achieved a record of six straight wins on the road, setting a new single-season mark for the franchise. This streak also ties the team record for the most consecutive road victories, which dates back to the 2010-11 seasons. This is a remarkable improvement considering Campbell’s initial tenure where the team had a dismal 0-11-1 record in road games. Since a hard-fought 31-30 win against the Bears in Chicago on November 13, 2022, the Lions’ road record has significantly improved to 16 wins against just 5 losses.
“Everyone in that locker room has contributed to this turnaround. Winning on the road is an indicator of a well-performing team, and we are proving we can do that,” Campbell stated. “Right now, we’re in a good vibe, focusing solely on achieving the next victory.”
The Lions, sporting a 10-1 record, are preparing for a quick turnaround as they host the Chicago Bears (4-7) on Thursday. “This matchup is crucial; it’s against a divisional foe, and it’s one we need. A win keeps us all smiling, but a loss in a division game is tough to swallow,” Campbell commented. “Both Minnesota and Green Bay are close behind, and Chicago is still in the race. This week is significant for us.”
In the NFC North standings, the Lions lead with the Vikings (9-2) and Packers (8-3) closely trailing, leaving the Bears behind.
As for the Lions’ strengths, their running game has continued to thrive. Running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery each scored a scrimmage touchdown in Sunday’s match-up, marking the tenth occasion this season when both have found the end zone in a game. Gibbs had two touchdowns while Montgomery added one. The team has remained undefeated in games where both running backs score. They have now made history as the first running back duo in the NFL to achieve 10 or more rushing touchdowns in consecutive seasons.
However, there are areas needing attention, particularly the secondary, which faced challenges in the absence of rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold, who was sidelined due to a groin injury. Kindle Vildor replaced Arnold and was frequently targeted by Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, conceding three completions for a total of 60 yards.
In terms of player performances, punter Jack Fox showcased his ability to alter field positions effectively after a previous week where the Lions played without punting against the Jaguars. He delivered a solid performance with four punts averaging 48 yards, proving pivotal in maintaining advantageous field position. “We relied heavily on Jack Fox today, and he did spectacularly,” Campbell noted. “He consistently pinned the Colts inside the 20, which was crucial for our strategy.”
On the downside for the Lions, tight end Sam LaPorta struggled to align with quarterback Jared Goff upon his return from a shoulder injury. He was targeted six times but managed to haul in only three passes for 19 yards, with at least one errant throw going overhead.
As for injuries, the Lions are monitoring several key players ahead of Thursday’s game. Campbell expressed particular concern about the availability of tackle Taylor Decker (knee), wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown (knee) and Kalif Raymond (foot), and cornerback Carlton Davis III (knee, thumb). None were expected to practice on Monday based on the injury report. Running back David Montgomery (shoulder) and defensive tackle D.J. Reader (illness) were also anticipated not to participate. Conversely, cornerback Terrion Arnold (groin) was on track for full participation in practice.
A vital statistic to note: the Lions have limited their opponents to just 17 touchdowns through the first 11 games of the season, the fewest they have allowed since 1962. Impressively, their defense has gone 10 consecutive quarters without conceding a touchdown and has successfully kept opposing teams from scoring in the second half for three straight games.
Looking ahead, the Lions aim to snap a seven-game losing streak on Thanksgiving, having last claimed victory on the holiday in 2016. They will face the Bears at Ford Field, where their Thanksgiving record against Chicago stands at 8 wins and 11 losses.
