NAPLES, Italy — On Monday, fans and officials of Napoli gathered to honor the legacy of Diego Maradona, marking the fourth anniversary of his passing. The tributes were concentrated around various murals depicting the Argentine football legend scattered throughout the city.

Napoli’s coach, Antonio Conte, team captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo, and president Aurelio De Laurentiis took part in the memorial by laying flowers at two prominent murals. This included a large mural located in the Quartieri Spagnoli, which serves as an informal tribute hall to Maradona.

Many fans came together at the site, passionately chanting Maradona’s name and filling the air with smoke in the signature blue shades that commemorate the jersey he wore while playing for both Napoli and the national team of Argentina.

Diego Maradona passed away at the age of 60 on November 25, 2020, due to a heart attack, just two weeks after being discharged from a Buenos Aires hospital following brain surgery. His remarkable career is highlighted by guiding Napoli to secure its inaugural Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990. In honor of his contributions, the club renamed its stadium to Stadio Diego Armando Maradona following his death.

In 2023, Napoli celebrated its third Italian league title and continues to demonstrate strong performance, currently leading the Serie A standings in the ongoing season.
