WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A motorcycle deputy from South Florida tragically passed away on Monday due to injuries sustained in a recent accident that also claimed the lives of two of his fellow deputies.
Deputy Ignacio “Dan” Diaz, 51, was involved in the crash that occurred early Thursday and resulted in the deaths of Cpl. Luis Paez and Deputy Ralph “Butch” Waller. The deputies were engaged in traffic enforcement duties in the Wellington area, which is located west of West Palm Beach.
At the time of the incident, the three deputies were positioned on the shoulder of a heavily trafficked road while trying to restart one of their motorcycles. An SUV driver, in an attempt to navigate around another vehicle, lost control and struck the law enforcement officers, as detailed by Sheriff Ric Bradshaw last week.
Following the collision, all three deputies were rushed to the hospital, but despite medical efforts, Paez, 58, and Waller, 54, unfortunately, succumbed to their injuries shortly thereafter on Thursday.
The identity of the SUV driver involved in the incident has not yet been disclosed, and as of now, no charges have been brought against them. Sheriff Bradshaw mentioned last week that it remains uncertain whether speed contributed to the crash, although preliminary assessments indicated that the driver seemed to be neither under the influence of drugs nor alcohol. The investigation surrounding the incident is still ongoing.
