The Vatican is set to enhance its digital engagement with Catholic followers by introducing remote access to St. Peter’s tomb during the upcoming Holy Year.
Pope Francis will officially launch a webcam on December 2 that will be placed under the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica, allowing individuals worldwide to view this sacred site from afar.
In preparation for the 2025 Jubilee, an additional webcam will be mounted at the basilica’s Holy Door. This significant event, which occurs once every 25 years, is expected to attract 32 million pilgrims to Rome. Those who enter through the Holy Door will receive indulgences, symbolizing the forgiveness of sins. Pope Francis is scheduled to open the Holy Door on Christmas Eve, emphasizing the inclusive nature of this spiritual journey by providing “symbolic access” to those unable to visit in person, according to the Vatican’s announcement on Monday.
In conjunction with these digital initiatives, the Vatican is also launching a new magazine during the Holy Year. This publication will feature a section where Pope Francis addresses reader inquiries. One highlighted question comes from a grandmother worried about her grandchildren’s choice not to have their baptism, reflecting the pontiff’s engagement with pressing concerns facing the faithful.
