US Air Force reports drone sightings near three bases in England last week

The U.S. Air Force has reported the detection of several small drones that were spotted last week near three military bases in eastern England utilized by American forces.
The drones were seen between Wednesday and Friday in the vicinity of RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Feltwell. These incidents were actively monitored as the drones were observed flying over and around the bases, according to a statement from U.S. Air Forces Europe.

While the Air Force has not disclosed the identity of those responsible for these drone sightings, officials at the bases concluded that there was no effect on local residents or essential infrastructure.
RAF Lakenheath is the base for the 48th Fighter Wing, which is recognized by the U.S. Air Force as a key component of its combat readiness in Europe. RAF Mildenhall is home to the 100th Air Refueling Wing, and RAF Feltwell serves as a central location for housing, educational facilities, and various services.

The Air Force stated, “To protect operational security, we do not discuss our specific force protection measures but retain the right to protect the installation.” They continued, “We continue to monitor our airspace and are collaborating with host-nation authorities and mission partners to ensure the safety of base personnel, facilities, and assets.”

While it remains uncertain whether these drone incursions had any hostile intent, they occurred during a period marked by a significant escalation in hostilities in Ukraine, the most serious since the outset of Russia’s extensive invasion nearly three years ago.
During this week, Ukraine targeted sites within Russia using intermediate-range missiles that had been supplied by the U.S. and Britain, following authorizations from President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

In retaliation, Russia launched a new intermediate-range ballistic missile toward Ukraine, with President Vladimir Putin asserting that his nation reserves the right to target countries that permit their weapons to be used against Russia.

RAF Lakenheath, Mildenhall, and Feltwell are all located in close proximity within the counties of Suffolk and Norfolk, primarily serving the U.S. Air Force.
The British Ministry of Defense has emphasized that “we take threats seriously and maintain robust measures” to safeguard military installations, adding, “This includes counter-drone security capabilities. We won’t comment further on security procedures.”
