SAN MARCOS, Texas — On Saturday night, Christian Veilleux connected with Dorian Fleming for three touchdown passes, while Freddie Brock contributed with three rushing touchdowns as Georgia State turned the tide in their favor, scoring 31 straight points to defeat Texas State 52-44, thus ending a troublesome seven-game losing streak.
This victory marks Georgia State’s (3-8, 1-6 Sun Belt Conference) first win since they edged out Vanderbilt 36-32 back on September 14.
The game began with Texas State (6-5, 4-3) taking an early lead when Jordan McCloud completed a 6-yard touchdown pass to Chris Dawn Jr., putting them ahead 14-7 with just over 12 minutes left in the second quarter. However, Georgia State responded with an impressive eight-play, 75-yard drive, culminating in a 30-yard touchdown pass from Veilleux to Fleming. Shortly afterward, Kenyatta Watson intercepted a pass, returning it 30 yards to set up Fleming’s 11-yard touchdown catch, which gave the Panthers a 21-14 advantage just before halftime.
As the second quarter was drawing to a close, K.D. McDaniel executed a strip-sack against McCloud, with the ball being recovered by Christian Lorenzo at the Texas State 39-yard line. Braeden McAlister then capped off the half with a 52-yard field goal, increasing Georgia State’s lead to 31-14 by halftime.
Brock began his scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. He followed that with an explosive 57-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. His final contribution, a 16-yard rush, pushed Georgia State’s lead to 52-29 in the fourth quarter.
For Texas State, McCloud completed 28 of 44 passes for a total of 302 yards and three touchdowns, all of which went to Chris Dawn. Despite the loss, Dawn managed to secure five receptions for 42 yards.
