SAN ANTONIO — Victor Wembanyama showcased an impressive performance scoring 25 points as the San Antonio Spurs staged a remarkable comeback to defeat the Golden State Warriors 104-94 on Saturday evening. Harrison Barnes contributed significantly as well, adding 22 points to the scoreboard.
Wembanyama also registered nine assists, collected seven rebounds, and blocked three shots in his first game back after missing three consecutive matches due to a bruised right knee. Another standout for San Antonio was rookie Stephon Castle, who not only added 19 points but also made a crucial defensive play, stealing the ball from Stephen Curry behind the three-point line with just 1:46 left on the clock, helping to secure an eight-point lead for the Spurs.
For the Warriors, Andrew Wiggins led the way with 20 points, while Curry managed to finish with 14 points. Trayce Jackson-Davis supported the effort with 12 points and eight rebounds but it wasn’t enough to clinch the win, following their recent two-game winning streak. The San Antonio Spurs went on an impressive 11-0 scoring run to gain a 97-90 advantage, with Castle and Wembanyama contributing all but two points during this critical stretch. The Warriors struggled in the final moments, failing to score for an extended period of 4 1/2 minutes, and they went without a field goal for over five minutes.
The Spurs faced challenges in their lineup, missing key players such as Devin Vassell (with a bruised left knee), Keldon Johnson (tightness in his right hamstring), and Jeremy Sochan (who recently underwent left thumb surgery).
In terms of performance takeaways, Golden State’s bench, which has typically averaged 54 points, was limited to just 36 points in this matchup. Meanwhile, San Antonio managed to only lead for 22 seconds prior to their late-game surge. The Spurs started off strong with Barnes scoring a layup just 21 seconds into the match, but the Warriors quickly responded with an 11-0 run, establishing a 20-8 lead.
A key moment in the game occurred when Castle scored a driving layup with 4:25 remaining, igniting a decisive scoring spree for the Spurs. Following that, he made a three-pointer from about 27 feet, Wembanyama nailed one from an impressive 31 feet, and Castle capped off the run by making one of two free throws, stretching the lead to 97-90 with only 2:28 left in the game.
Notably, San Antonio outscored Golden State by a significant margin in the final quarter, tallying 33 points to the Warriors’ 13.
Looking ahead, the Warriors will host the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night, while the Spurs prepare for an away game against the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night.
