STILLWATER, Okla. — Behren Morton and Tahj Brooks each contributed four touchdowns, leading Texas Tech to a thrilling 56-48 win over Oklahoma State on Saturday.
The victory allowed the Red Raiders (7-4, 5-3 Big 12) to rebound from a prior defeat against Colorado, while the Cowboys (3-8, 0-8) continued their disappointing run, marking their eighth consecutive loss and leaving them as the only team in the Big 12 without a win in conference play.
With just over six minutes remaining, Brooks scored on a 1-yard run, solidifying a lead that Texas Tech would not relinquish. This touchdown was set up by an impressive 45-yard kickoff return from Drae McCray, which placed the Red Raiders in advantageous field position, starting the drive at their own 47-yard line.
The Cowboys’ attempts to mount a comeback were thwarted when Jacob Rodriguez recovered a fumble in the end zone, allowing Texas Tech to extend their lead to 56-42. He further cemented the team’s victory by intercepting a pass from freshman quarterback Maealiuaki Smith, who was making his debut start after Alan Bowman was benched.
Morton was impressive, completing 35 of 50 passes for an impressive 366 yards and four touchdowns. Brooks also shined offensively, rushing 28 times for 133 yards, in addition to catching nine passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. For Oklahoma State, Ollie Gordon II stood out with a season-high 156 rushing yards on 15 carries, adding three touchdowns. He also contributed with three receptions for 30 yards and a 27-yard pass to Rashod Owens. Smith had a commendable first start, throwing for 326 yards on 26 of 36 passing, although his only interception came on the final drive. Despite both teams displaying offensive firepower, Oklahoma State struggled defensively, allowing big plays throughout the game.
The Perspective
For Texas Tech, this performance highlighted their potent offensive capabilities just when they needed it to ensure their season remains on track. This win marks the third consecutive season under coach Joey McGuire where the Red Raiders have achieved at least five conference victories.
On the other hand, Oklahoma State’s challenging season continues to spiral downward. The Cowboys were unable to secure a win during Senior Day festivities, and their chances for conference success are diminishing rapidly. To avoid ending the season as the only team in the Big 12 without a conference win, Oklahoma State must achieve a victory against Colorado in their upcoming game.
Looking Ahead
Next, Texas Tech will host West Virginia, while Oklahoma State is set to face Colorado on the road.
