VALPARAISO, Ind. — In a thrilling finish, Valparaiso managed to secure a last-minute victory over Davidson with a score of 18-17 on Saturday afternoon. With just four seconds left on the clock, a critical punt block set the stage for a dramatic play, as Gary Givens III caught a touchdown pass from Caron Tyler on the final play of the game.
Givens displayed remarkable focus as he caught the pass amid strong defensive coverage in the end zone, clinching the touchdown just as time expired, bringing the score to 17-16. Following this remarkable play, Tyler executed a shovel pass to Jake Vickers for a successful two-point conversion, which ultimately gave the Beacons the win. The touchdown opportunity arose after a punt block credited to Shawn Fester, although it appeared that the Davidson punter might not have made contact with the ball, pressured by Valparaiso’s aggressive rush.
Davidson had a slight edge at halftime, leading 14-10, thanks to an 8-yard touchdown run by Mari Adams with only 23 seconds remaining in the second quarter. In the fourth quarter, Adam Zouagui added to Davidson’s score with a 39-yard field goal, extending their lead to 17-10 about halfway through the period.
Tyler made a notable contribution for Valparaiso, completing 11 of 20 passes for a total of 157 yards, while also leading the team in rushing with 66 yards. For Davidson, Mason Sheron was the standout performer with a solid 110 yards rushing, helping the Wildcats amass a total of 228 rushing yards as a unit. The Davidson quarterbacks had a conservative outing, attempting only nine passes and completing seven for 56 yards.
