Winston-Salem, N.C. — In an exciting showdown on Saturday night, Hunter Sallis delivered an impressive performance, scoring a season-high 31 points, leading Wake Forest to a 67-57 victory over Detroit Mercy. This matchup marked the first encounter between the two teams.
With just under five minutes remaining in the game, Sallis hit a crucial 3-pointer that extended Wake Forest’s lead to 12 points at 61-49. Soon after, Davin Cosby further boosted the score with a layup that pushed the advantage to 14 points. However, the Titans responded with two free throws from Jared Lary and a three-pointer from Orlando Lovejoy, narrowing the gap to single digits at 63-54. Sallis managed to sink a jumper with two minutes left on the clock, but Lary countered with a three-point play that brought the deficit down to eight points at 65-57. In the closing moments, Sallis sealed the win by making two free throws with just 16 seconds remaining.
With this outing, Sallis also passed a personal milestone, surpassing 1,000 career points at Wake Forest, becoming only the 60th player in the program’s history to reach this achievement. During the game, Sallis demonstrated his sharpshooting ability, hitting 5 of 9 attempts from beyond the three-point line, while shooting 12 of 18 overall. In addition to his scoring, he contributed four assists and three steals. Cosby also made his mark with 11 points, converting 3 of 11 from long distance for the Deacons, who now have a record of 6-1.
For Detroit Mercy, Lovejoy was the standout player, finishing the game with 15 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. TJ Nadeau provided valuable contributions off the bench, scoring 13 points and grabbing nine rebounds, while Lary chipped in with ten points.
