MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — In a pivotal match on Saturday, New Mexico State overcame a three-game losing stretch by defeating Middle Tennessee with a final score of 36-21. Quarterback Brandon Nunez played a crucial role, completing only two passes, both of which were touchdown throws.
Nunez’s first touchdown was a 12-yard connection with Seth McGowan, extending the Aggies’ lead to 20-7 midway through the third quarter. Although Middle Tennessee managed to narrow the gap to 26-21 early in the final quarter, Nunez responded with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Cooper Sheehan, bringing the score to 33-21 with 7:43 left on the clock.
The Aggies’ performance was notably strengthened by Parker Awad, who completed 12 out of 16 attempts for a total of 221 yards. Additionally, McGowan contributed significantly with 83 yards rushing, while Mike Washington added a touchdown run and Dylan Early showcased his defensive skills by recording a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown.
On the other hand, Middle Tennessee’s quarterback, Nicholas Vattiato, was busy as well, going 30 of 45 in passing attempts, achieving 277 yards along with two touchdowns but also throwing two interceptions. This defeat adds to Middle Tennessee’s woes as they have now lost three of their last four games, leaving both teams with a record of 3-8 and 2-5 in Conference USA competition.
