LOS ANGELES — In a commanding performance, Kobe Johnson scored all of his 12 points in the first half, guiding UCLA to a comfortable 80-47 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Friday night.
Johnson shot 4 of 8 from the field and capitalized on 4 of 6 free throws, contributing significantly to the Bruins’ success, who improved their record to 5-1. Alongside his scoring, he accumulated six rebounds, six steals, and five assists in a stellar all-around effort.
UCLA demonstrated depth in their lineup, with both Tyler Bilodeau and Eric Dailey Jr. also netting 12 points. Additionally, bench players Aday Mara and Trent Perry each contributed 10 points to the Bruins’ total.
For Cal State Fullerton, Keith Richard and reserve Davis Bynum each tallied 10 points as the Titans fell to a 1-5 record. This loss came on the heels of a narrow 62-61 victory over Idaho State at home.
UCLA maintained a firm grip on the game, leading 39-25 at halftime, and expanded the margin shortly after the break, going up 48-27 thanks to a layup from William Kyle III with 15:42 left on the clock. The Bruins weren’t done, as they reached a 70-39 advantage with Kyle’s tip-in just four minutes prior to the final buzzer.
In terms of shooting efficiency, UCLA hit exactly half of their 60 attempts overall but struggled from three-point range, making only 6 of 18, while managing 14 of 23 from the free-throw line. In contrast, Cal State Fullerton faced difficulties on the offensive end, posting a shooting percentage of just 28.8%. They made only 5 of 24 from deep and were 12 of 13 from the charity stripe.
UCLA’s dominance in the paint was evident as they outscored the Titans 40-18 and capitalized on 21 turnovers by Cal State Fullerton, transforming those into 27 points.
UCLA is set to host Southern Utah next on Tuesday, while Cal State Fullerton will remain on the road to face Pepperdine on the same day.
