CLEVELAND — Alyssa Nakken, who made history as the first woman to serve as a coach in a Major League Baseball game, is moving on from the San Francisco Giants to join the Cleveland Guardians.
Nakken achieved a significant milestone in 2022 when she stepped in as first-base coach after an ejection during a game. A distinguished former college softball athlete from Sacramento State, she became part of the Giants organization in 2014, later earning a promotion to the coaching staff under manager Gabe Kapler in 2020, marking her as the first full-time female coach in Major League Baseball.
The specific position Nakken will take on with the Guardians remains undisclosed. This follows the team’s successful 2022 season, where they triumphed in the AL Central under the leadership of first-year manager Stephen Vogt. She will collaborate with former Giants coaches Craig Albernaz and Kai Correa in her new role in Cleveland.
In a statement released on Friday, the Giants expressed their gratitude for Nakken’s remarkable contributions to the team and acknowledged her role in pioneering opportunities for women in sports. “We are thankful for Alyssa Nakken’s incredible contributions to the San Francisco Giants and her role in paving the way for other women in athletics,” the organization stated. “Her commitment, leadership, and enthusiasm for baseball have inspired many, and she has significantly impacted both the Giants and the broader baseball community.”
“As she embarks on this exciting new chapter, we are confident that she will continue to inspire others and achieve remarkable success. We wish all the best for her and her family in this new endeavor.”
