LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Freshman guard Imari Berry showcased an impressive performance by netting five three-pointers and achieving a personal best of 21 points as the 25th-ranked Louisville Cardinals secured a commanding 107-70 victory over Morehead State on Thursday evening.
During the game, Berry made a significant impact in the second quarter, contributing 11 points that helped the Cardinals pull away from their in-state rivals, ultimately ending the first half with a 22-point lead.
Alongside Berry, freshmen Tajianna Roberts and Isla Juffermans also shined, each scoring 11 points for the Cardinals (3-2). The team was particularly effective from beyond the arc, making 16 of their 27 attempts at a rate of 59%. Overall, they shot 62% from the field, hitting 39 of 62 shots. However, their free-throw shooting was less satisfying, as they only converted 54% (13 of 24) of their attempts. In total, 14 players managed to register points on the scoreboard for Louisville.
On the opposing side, Aileen Marquez finished with 20 points, while Harley Paynter contributed 19 for the Eagles (1-4).
Berry’s pivotal moment came during the second period, where he scored 11 points, including three three-pointers. After ending the first quarter leading narrowly at 28-27, Ja’Leah Williams sandwiched two three-pointers around a jump shot from Berry to spark an early 8-0 run in the second quarter.
Berry extended the Cardinals’ lead by adding another three-point shot, while Roberts contributed with one of her own during an 8-0 burst. Following a free throw from Morehead State, Berry again found the mark from three-point territory, triggering an 11-0 run for Louisville, which featured another three-pointer from Roberts.
At halftime, the scoreboard read 59-37, with the Eagles struggling after their last field goal, which had narrowed the gap to five points. They missed their last five shots, committing four turnovers during that time.
In the second quarter alone, the Cardinals outscored Morehead State 31-10, thanks to their seven made three-pointers.
Looking ahead, Louisville is set to face South Florida in the WBCA State Farm Showcase on Sunday.
