The FBI has charged Harun Abdul-Malik Yener, a Florida man, in connection with a plot to bomb the New York Stock Exchange. According to charging documents, Yener expressed a desire to target the iconic financial hub, claiming, “The Stock Exchange, we want to hit that, because it will wake people up.”
Investigation reveals troubling evidence
The investigation began in February 2024 when the FBI received a tip about bomb-making materials stored in an unlocked unit in Coral Springs, Florida. A search revealed electronic watches with timers and various circuit board components, which raised suspicions.
Undercover operation leads to arrest
To gather evidence, the FBI introduced undercover employees who posed as supporters of Yener’s plan. According to the criminal complaint, Yener tasked these individuals with acquiring explosive materials and shared his vision for an attack designed to incite fear and chaos.
Ideological shifts and extremist rejections
Court records describe Yener as a transient individual with a history of violent threats and online activity promoting bomb-making techniques. Despite his extremist rhetoric, Yener reportedly failed in attempts to join groups such as the Boogaloo Boys and Proud Boys, who deemed him “unsuitable” due to his desire for martyrdom.
Recorded message revealed
On November 12th, in the presence of an FBI informant, Yener reportedly recorded a message intended for release after the bombing. The message stated, “Our war is with the government,” and he instructed that it be sent to NBC News following the attack.
Arrest and prosecution
Yener was arrested by federal agents and is now in custody. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, which is prosecuting the case, has declined to comment.
Averted tragedy
The swift actions of the FBI and undercover operatives appear to have prevented a potential act of domestic terrorism, highlighting ongoing efforts to counter extremist threats within the United States. Yener now faces serious charges, and the investigation continues.
