SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — A stellar performance by Devon Barnes, who scored 23 points, propelled the UTEP Miners to a narrow 79-76 victory over the UCSB Gauchos on Wednesday night.
Barnes showcased his skills by shooting 5 of 12 overall and making 3 of 7 from beyond the arc, in addition to hitting 10 of 14 free throws, contributing significantly to UTEP’s record, now at 3-1.
Otis Frazier III also made a strong impact in the game, finishing with 21 points, shooting 9 of 18 from the field, including 2 of 6 in three-point attempts, along with collecting five rebounds, dishing out five assists, and blocking four shots. Ahamad Bynum added to the scoring effort, going 5 of 7 from the field and an impressive 4 of 5 from three-point range for a total of 15 points.
For the Gauchos, who now stand at 4-1, Kenny Pohto was the standout player, racking up 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Teammate Jason Fontenet II contributed 20 points and eight rebounds, while Stephan D. Swenson rounded off the scoring for UCSB with 17 points and six assists.
At halftime, UTEP held a slight advantage over UCSB, leading 37-32. Frazier emerged as an offensive force in the first half, netting 13 points. Although UTEP was outscored by two points in the second half, Barnes led the Miners with another 12 points, helping ensure their tight victory.
