PHILADELPHIA — Bryce Huff, the defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles, is scheduled to undergo surgery on his left wrist this Thursday, a procedure that may pave the way for his return later in the season.
After leaving the New York Jets in free agency, Huff signed a three-year contract worth $51 million with the Eagles. Over his four seasons with the Jets, he recorded 17 1/2 sacks, 65 total tackles, and one forced fumble.
However, Huff’s performance in his inaugural season with Philadelphia has been challenging. He has managed to secure only 2 1/2 sacks and four quarterback hits, and his participation on the field has decreased since he sustained his wrist injury prior to a matchup against Jacksonville earlier this month.
Prior to the surgery, he had been competing while wearing a cast that immobilized his thumb.
“He’s shown remarkable determination throughout this ordeal,” commented coach Nick Sirianni on Wednesday. “We hope this procedure will restore some functionality to his hand.”
In Huff’s absence, Nolan Smith will step in as the starting edge rusher, while rookie third-round draft pick Jalyx Hunt is expected to receive increased playtime for the Eagles, who currently hold an impressive record of 8-2.
“We have confidence in the depth of our roster,” Sirianni added.
Currently, the Eagles are leading the NFC East and possess the second-best overall record in the conference as they prepare for their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Rams this Sunday.
