MALAGA, Spain — Jasmine Paolini, a two-time Grand Slam finalist, concluded an impressive season by guiding Italy to its first Billie Jean King Cup title since 2013 on Wednesday. She achieved this remarkable feat by defeating Rebecca Sramkova with a score of 6-2, 6-1, securing a 2-0 victory for Italy over Slovakia in the final round of the women’s team competition.
Ranked No. 4 in the world, Paolini showcased her skill as she reached the finals of the French Open in June and Wimbledon in July. This accomplishment made her the first female player since Serena Williams in 2016 to compete in the championship matches at both the French and All England Club tournaments within the same year. Prior to this outstanding season, the 28-year-old had a tough run in major tournaments, often being eliminated in the early rounds during her previous 16 appearances.
In addition to her singles success, Paolini teamed up with Sara Errani to secure a gold medal in doubles at the Paris Olympics in August. Although they were set to compete in the final match against Slovakia, it ultimately became unnecessary as Italy had already clinched the best-of-three series by winning the two singles matches.
The day began with Lucia Bronzetti delivering a strong performance in Italy’s opener, defeating Viktoria Hruncakova 6-2, 6-4. The match took place in front of a spirited crowd that included tennis legend Billie Jean King, who is also known for her advocacy for equal rights in sports.
