Unrivaled has officially established its teams for the upcoming season.
The league has categorized players into six groups consisting of wings, guards, and forwards. The six coaches proceeded to select players by drafting teams, with the aim of ensuring balanced competition across the roster. An interesting element of the draft was that coaches were unaware of which team they would be managing until after the teams were formed for the 3-on-3 league.
Notably, co-founders Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier find themselves on opposing teams. Stewart’s team features former Seattle Storm teammate Jewell Loyd, alongside current New York Liberty player Courtney Vandersloot. The lineup also includes Dijonai Carrington, Rickea Jackson, and Aaliyah Edwards, forming what is known as Team Mist.
On the other hand, Collier leads the Lunar Owls, which boasts players such as Skylar Diggins-Smith, Natasha Cloud, Allisha Gray, and Shakira Austin, alongside one of the two wildcard roster spots. Currently, the league has confirmed 34 out of the necessary 36 players for the teams, leaving room for two additional signings. There have been discussions with WNBA Rookie of the Year Caitlin Clark regarding a potential addition.
The Phantom team also includes a wildcard spot and features notable players such as Jackie Young, Marina Mabrey, Tiffany Hayes, Satou Sabally, and Brittney Griner among its main roster members.
Team Vinyl is composed of Arike Ogunbowale, Rhyne Howard, Jordin Canada, Rae Burrell, Dearica Hamby, and Aliyah Boston. Meanwhile, Team Rose brings together Chelsea Gray, Kahleah Copper, Brittney Sykes, Lexie Hull, Angel Reese, and Azura Stevens.
Lastly, Team Laces is made up of Kelsey Plum, Courtney Williams, Kayla McBride, Kate Martin, Alyssa Thomas, and Stefanie Dolson. The league’s inaugural games are scheduled to kick off on January 17 in Miami. Players across the total pool will share over $8 million in salaries, along with receiving equity stakes in the league.
Recently, Unrivaled secured a multiyear partnership with TNT and its various sports channels to broadcast more than 45 games. Viewers can expect match-ups to air three nights a week, with games featured on TNT every Monday and Friday, while Saturdays are reserved for truTV broadcasts.
