ARLINGTON, Texas — A recent match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson has broken records, generating an impressive $18.1 million, marking it as the most profitable combat sports event in Texas history, as announced by the promotional company co-founded by Paul.
This eight-round clash, held at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium, attracted an impressive audience of around 72,000 spectators. The bout was part of a co-main event that also showcased Katie Taylor battling Amanda Serrano in a super lightweight championship that sparked controversy due to its close decision.
The event shattered the previous high for combat sports in Texas, which was set at $9 million during Canelo Alvarez’s fight against Billy Joe Saunders at the same venue in 2021. That particular showdown saw an audience exceeding 73,000 and was notable for being the largest sporting event crowd in the U.S. since the pandemic began.
In the ring, Paul triumphed over Tyson, the 58-year-old former heavyweight champion, in a decisive victory, claiming all but one round according to the judges’ scorecards. This match marked Paul’s 11th win out of 12 fights, with seven knockouts over a professional career spanning four and a half years.
Betting trends have also reflected the fight’s popularity. BetMGM noted that it became the most wagered boxing or mixed martial arts bout in its history, attracting three times the usual number of bets and quadrupling the amount wagered compared to previous combat events. Officials from Caesars Sportsbook likened the engagement levels to those typically seen during popular NFL Monday night games.
Additionally, Netflix achieved a milestone with the fight, reporting a peak viewership of 65 million during its inaugural live sporting event. Following this, the streaming service is set to broadcast two NFL games on Christmas Day, followed by WWE “Raw” on January 6.
