SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama will be sidelined for the upcoming matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday as he continues to recover from a bruised right knee.
Devon Vassell, a guard for the Spurs, has been marked as questionable for the contest due to discomfort in his left knee.
Both Wembanyama and Vassell missed the Spurs’ recent loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday and are currently considered day to day.
For Oklahoma City, the absence of Chet Holmgren looms large, as he is set to be out for the next ten weeks due to a fractured right hip sustained on November 10 during a game against the Golden State Warriors.
Wembanyama’s injury occurred during the fourth quarter of San Antonio’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers, where he collided with Lakers’ player Anthony Davis. The incident led to a foul call against Wembanyama, who briefly left the game but did return before the Spurs ultimately lost 120-115.
As a standout rookie last season, Wembanyama was unanimously chosen as the NBA Rookie of the Year and has been impressive this season, averaging 22.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.7 blocks, and 2.8 assists over 13 games.
In addition, the Spurs are currently without their head coach, Gregg Popovich, who suffered a mild stroke on November 2, ahead of a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. There is no clear timeline for when the veteran coach will be able to return.
In Popovich’s absence, assistant coach Mitch Johnson has stepped up to lead the team as acting head coach.
