SEATTLE — The New York Rangers secured a clean victory over the Seattle Kraken, defeating them 2-0 on Sunday evening.
Alexis Lafreniere and Zac Jones each scored for the Rangers, while goaltender Jonathan Quick turned away 24 shots, marking his second consecutive shutout and the 62nd of his illustrious career. Quick remains unbeaten in his role as a backup to Igor Shesterkin, winning all five of his starts.
On the other side, Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer recorded 21 saves, but his team’s four-game winning streak came to an abrupt end with this loss.
Lafreniere opened the scoring with just 2:30 remaining in the second period. A well-placed pass from Artemi Panarin found him positioned at the left side of the net, allowing for an uncomplicated shot past Grubauer. This assist from Panarin further extended his point streak to seven games, showcasing his significant contribution to the team’s offense.
Jones added a second goal just three minutes into the third period. He initiated the play from the defensive zone and received a pass from Kaapo Kakko in the left circle, skillfully slipping the puck past Grubauer’s right shoulder in a moment that was a rare misstep for the Seattle goalie, who had otherwise put forth a solid performance.
Observations from the game indicate that the Rangers have not only maintained a strong start this season, scoring first in 10 of their 16 games, but they also hold a flawless record of 10-0-0 when doing so. Conversely, the Kraken have now faced the unfortunate circumstance of being shut out four times across their 19 games played.
Statistically, the Rangers continue to dominate their matchups against the Kraken, now boasting an impressive all-time record of 6-0-1 against them.
Looking ahead, the Rangers are set to continue their road trip in Vancouver on Tuesday, which is the second game of a four-game stretch away from home. Meanwhile, the Kraken will wrap up their six-game home stand with a matchup against Nashville on Wednesday.
