The bird flu virus has been detected in poultry on a commercial farm located in England, as announced by the U.K. government on Sunday.
The virus strain identified is H5N1, and it was discovered in birds being raised in St. Ives, a picturesque coastal town in Cornwall. To control the outbreak, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has mandated the humane culling of all poultry within the affected region.
This marks the first instance of confirmed H5N1 in domesticated birds in England for the current season. Additionally, the government reported that the virus has also been recently identified in wild birds not only in the southwest of England but also across various regions in continental Europe.
H5N1 bird flu has been spreading among wild avian populations as well as among poultry and mammals in the United States.
In a related matter, Canadian health officials disclosed that a teenager from British Columbia tested positive for bird flu, with the virus being linked to a poultry outbreak in that province.
