COLLEGE PARK, Md. — In a dominant performance, the No. 11 Maryland Terrapins triumphed over Towson University with a score of 98-63 on Sunday. Kaylene Smikle was the standout player, contributing 23 points to the team’s total.

Christina Dalce and Shyanne Sellers also had impressive outings, with each recording double-doubles. Dalce tallied 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds, marking her third double-double in just five games this season. Sellers added 10 points and dished out 10 assists, solidifying a strong showing for the Terrapins, who now hold a 5-0 record. Smikle demonstrated exceptional shooting efficiency, making nine of her twelve attempts and grabbing four rebounds. Other notable contributors included Sarah Te-Biasu, who netted 13 points, Saylor Poffenbarger, who scored 12 off the bench, and Allie Kubek, who added another 10 points.

India Johnston led the charge for Towson, scoring 22 points, including five successful three-pointers. Aminata Diakite contributed 13 more points for the Tigers, who are struggling with a 0-4 record this season.

Maryland asserted control early in the game and led 54-40 at halftime. The team’s defensive efforts were particularly notable in the second half, where they limited Towson to just 23 points. The Tigers struggled offensively, shooting only 31% from the field, and managing to convert only six two-point shots while going 3-for-13 from beyond the arc.

Poffenbarger was pivotal in Maryland’s early surge, making two of the team’s five three-pointers in the first quarter, allowing the Terrapins to finish the opening period with a healthy 33-18 lead. By the end of the first half, Maryland had increased its lead to 20 points.

The Terrapins showcased stellar shooting, finishing with an impressive 62% shooting percentage in the second half and a total of 60% for the game. They were particularly lethal from three-point range, hitting 11 of 17 attempts, which is a 65% success rate. On the boards, Maryland dominated Towson, out-rebounding them 46 to 18.

Laura Harper, Towson’s head coach, is a former Maryland player who competed for the Terrapins from 2005 to 2008. She was honored as the Most Outstanding Player in the 2006 Final Four, leading her team to an NCAA Championship victory.
