CARDIFF, Wales — In a remarkable display of dominance, Australia inflicted upon Wales the longest losing streak in the history of their rugby union, which spans 143 years, with a commanding 52-20 victory at the Principality Stadium on Sunday.
This defeat marks the 11th straight loss for Wales, a troubling record that has persisted since they were ousted from the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals more than a year ago.
Notably, the Wallabies have accounted for three of these defeats, having previously triumphed over Wales in Sydney and Melbourne during July. The Australian side not only achieved their highest score against Wales in Cardiff, surpassing their previous best of 39 points, but also recorded their largest tally against them in 28 years.
Following their surprising win against England, the Wallabies are on an impressive streak, remaining unbeaten as they approach the midway point of their 40th anniversary grand slam tour, with upcoming matches against Scotland and Ireland on the horizon.
The match featured a total of eight tries for Australia, compared to just two for Wales. The visitors sprinted to a 19-0 lead before Wales started to mount a response by halftime. However, Australia regained their footing even when center Samu Kerevi received a 20-minute red card during his 50th test match.
Hooker Matt Faessler stood out with a hat trick of tries and was later joined in the scoring by fullback Tom Wright, who added another try in the final moments of the game. Noah Lolesio was instrumental as well, successfully converting six attempts.
Looking ahead, Wales faces a daunting challenge as they prepare to host the defending champions, South Africa, next weekend.
