MALAGA, Spain — Slovakia advanced to the semifinals of the Billie Jean King Cup finals after a strong performance, following their earlier victory against the United States, by defeating Australia 2-0 on Sunday.
Rebecca Sramkova led the way for Slovakia with a decisive 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Ajla Tomljanovic, securing the victory for her team. This win was complemented by Viktoria Hruncakova, who showcased her resilience by overcoming Kimberly Birrell in a tightly contested match that ended 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-3. This victory marked Hruncakova’s sixth consecutive win in the BJK Cup, spanning both singles and doubles matches.
Previously, Slovakia had achieved an impressive result against the United States, the most decorated nation in the tournament’s history, in the initial round of the event held in Malaga.
In the semifinals, Poland, led by Iga Swiatek and searching for their inaugural title, is set to face Italy. Last year, Italy finished as the runners-up to the current champions, Canada, who are scheduled to meet Great Britain in another quarterfinal match on Sunday.
