San Diego showcased an impressive performance on Saturday as Grant Sergent propelled the team to a 45-6 victory against Stetson by throwing six touchdown passes, five of which were thrown in the first half.
With this win, San Diego improved its record to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in league play, keeping them in a tie for second place in the Pioneer Football League alongside Butler. They trail Drake by one game in the standings, but the Bulldogs have the advantage due to their previous head-to-head victory of 30-28. The Toreros will conclude their regular season next Saturday when they travel to face Morehead State.
Sergent kicked off the scoring with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Cole Monach and quickly added two more touchdowns to Ja’seem Reed within just over a minute, connecting on passes of 24 and 30 yards, giving San Diego a solid 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. He continued to excel, throwing a 15-yard touchdown to Reed for his third connection before capping the half with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Josh Heverly, ending the half with an impressive 35-0 score.
Stetson managed to score their only touchdown towards the end of the game with a 52-yard run by Trey Clark with just 48 seconds remaining.
In terms of statistics, Sergent completed 20 of his 28 passes for a total of 311 yards. Isaiah Smith was a key player on the ground with 110 yards on 17 carries, while Reed excelled in the receiving game, recording five catches for 121 yards. On the other side, Stetson’s Kael Alexander completed 19 of 33 passes for 148 yards but struggled with two interceptions. Trey Clark led the Hatters’ rushing attack with 81 yards over eight carries as the team overall managed only 80 net rushing yards.
