TURIN, Italy — Alexander Zverev has secured his place in the semifinals, while Carlos Alcaraz is left awaiting the outcome of his chances to advance in the ATP Finals.
Zverev triumphed over Alcaraz with a score of 7-6 (5), 6-4 in their match on Friday, marking a pivotal moment in the event that concludes the tennis season for the top eight players.
With this victory, Zverev finished his group stage with an impeccable record of three wins, while both Alcaraz and Casper Ruud have recorded one win each. Andrey Rublev, however, remains winless.
For Alcaraz to progress, he requires Rublev to secure a victory against Ruud in the upcoming final group match.
In another group, top-ranked Jannik Sinner emerged victorious, finishing ahead of Taylor Fritz.
As the semifinals approach, Zverev is set to face Fritz, while Sinner is likely to compete against either Ruud or Alcaraz, depending on the results of the final matches.
Alcaraz, who has been battling health issues since his arrival in Turin, was seen again wearing a pink nose strip after experiencing breathing difficulties during his opening loss to Ruud.
This week, Zverev’s win allowed him to surpass Alcaraz, placing him at No. 2 in the rankings, and he now leads their personal head-to-head record at 6-5.
The match served as a form of redemption for Zverev, who faced Alcaraz in a grueling five-set match during the French Open final earlier this year.
