DURHAM, N.C. — In an impressive showing on Thursday night, Jordan Wood contributed off the bench with a personal best of 17 points, while Toby Fournier added 15, leading No. 16 Duke to a decisive victory over Dayton, finishing 84-49.
Wood’s performance was particularly notable as he shot 8-of-11, making a significant impact in the first half by scoring nine points. By halftime, Duke established a comfortable lead of 37-23.
Other contributors for Duke included Reigan Richardson with 12 points, Oluchi Okananwa adding 11, and both Ashlon Jackson and Vanessa de Jesus scoring 10 apiece. The team collectively shot 50% from the field and while they struggled at the free-throw line, converting only 9 of 19 attempts, their ability to capitalize on turnovers was pronounced. The Blue Devils converted 24 turnovers by the Flyers into 32 points. Additionally, they dominated the scoring in the paint, outpacing Dayton 48-12.
For Dayton, Ivy Wolf managed to sink four 3-pointers, culminating in a total of 14 points, and Ajok Madol contributed 12 points.
Duke maintained a robust lead throughout the game, particularly in the third quarter where they initiated a strong 13-0 run early on. By the end of that quarter, Duke extended their lead to 62-37 after a series of successful 3-pointers from Richardson and Okananwa. In the final frame, the Blue Devils continued to assert their dominance, outscoring Dayton 22-12.
After starting the game slowly, Dayton struck first with a 3-pointer from Rikki Harris, taking an early 8-0 lead. However, Duke bounced back remarkably, outscoring the Flyers 17-2 to gain control of the game.
Overall, Duke’s mix of strong shooting, lock-down defense, and the ability to take advantage of turnovers proved pivotal to their success as they improved their record to 3-1 for the season.
