LONDON — On Thursday, four individuals were taken into custody during a pro-Palestinian demonstration that took place outside a speech by former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at Queen’s University in Belfast.

Clinton, serving as the ceremonial chancellor of the university located in Northern Ireland’s capital, spoke on the concluding day of the Global Innovation Summit 2024. The event gathered leaders from various sectors, including politics, business, and academia, who focused on themes such as economic inclusion and global sustainability, as noted by the university.

Demonstrators brandished Palestinian flags and displayed a cut-out image of Clinton with blood on her hands, chanting “shame” in a show of discontent. Video clips revealed tense interactions and confrontations between the protesters and law enforcement, occurring outside the venue where Clinton was addressing the audience.

Authorities confirmed that the arrests were made for public disorder offenses.

In a public statement, Queen’s University acknowledged the importance of peaceful protest while denouncing the actions of a small group of demonstrators for their unrest.

The university highlighted its efforts in addressing the ongoing situation in the Middle East, mentioning initiatives such as advocating for a ceasefire, offering scholarship opportunities for Palestinian students, and implementing divestment strategies. They asserted commitment to responding constructively to the concerns voiced by their academic community.

During her remarks, Clinton reflected on Belfast’s transformation following years of conflict, noting the previous year’s celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement from 1998, which played a significant role in fostering peace within Northern Ireland.
