FAIRBURN, Ga. — A tragic incident involving law enforcement resulted in the death of a 23-year-old man from Atlanta, following a police pursuit that led to a shootout and the loss of a police dog.

Jason Andre Wilson was involved in a high-speed chase that kicked off just before 11 p.m. Wednesday in Coweta County before concluding in Fulton County, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The situation unfolded when deputies attempted to stop Wilson’s Chrysler 300 due to a potential registration issue. Instead of complying, Wilson accelerated and fled, reaching speeds up to 110 mph (175 kph) as he entered Fulton County.

In response to the chase, one deputy managed to force the Chrysler off the road and deployed a K-9 unit named Titan to assist in the apprehension. Authorities reported that Wilson opened fire, fatally wounding Titan and injuring the deputy multiple times. Officers returned fire, ultimately striking and killing Wilson.

The wounded deputy was transported to a hospital but has since been discharged and is expected to recover fully.

Titan, the K-9, had served with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office for over five years, making significant contributions to the force by locating missing individuals, detecting illegal substances, and assisting in various arrests.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wilson, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting a thorough analysis of the shooting incident. Once the inquiry concludes, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis will determine if any criminal charges are warranted.
