ARLINGTON, Texas — In a significant move, the Texas Rangers have brought aboard former Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker as a senior adviser for baseball operations.

Texas revealed this addition to their front office on Wednesday, coinciding with the announcement of signing right-handed pitcher Luis Curvelo to a major league contract.

Schumaker earned the title of 2023 National League Manager of the Year after leading Miami to an 84-78 record and guiding the team to its fourth playoff appearance in franchise history. However, the Marlins faced challenges last season, finishing with a 62-100 record after the departure of general manager Kim Ng. Ng was instrumental in hiring Schumaker and assembling the roster that achieved postseason success.

Following the difficult season, Schumaker and the Marlins mutually decided he would not return for the 2025 campaign. Over his two-year tenure, Schumaker’s leadership was tested as the team struggled with a record of 146-178, partly due to significant player trades and injuries.

Before his stint with the Marlins, Schumaker served as a bench coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, where he also enjoyed a successful playing career. He was part of the team’s roster during their World Series victory over the Rangers in 2011. Over his 11-season major league career, he played for the Cardinals (2005-2012), the Los Angeles Dodgers (2013), and the Cincinnati Reds (2014-2015).

Luis Curvelo, the 24-year-old right-handed pitcher, is coming off an impressive season where he went 4-0 with three saves and boasted a 2.57 ERA after 66 2/3 innings pitched across 49 relief outings for Double-A Arkansas, part of Seattle’s minor league system. This impressive track record highlights Curvelo’s aspirations for making his big league debut soon.

A native of Venezuela, Curvelo originally entered professional baseball by signing with Seattle as an international free agent in 2018.
