Denver Broncos Assistant Head Coach Departs Due to Vision Issues
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Mike Westhoff, the assistant head coach for the Denver Broncos, has announced his resignation, citing serious concerns regarding his vision.
At 76 years old, Westhoff has an extensive background in the NFL, having previously served as the special teams coordinator for both the New York Jets and the New Orleans Saints. He made a return from retirement to join head coach Sean Payton’s coaching team in Denver earlier this year.
Last week, Westhoff encountered significant vision problems that led him to consult with medical professionals. Following these consultations, he determined that stepping down from his position was necessary for his health.
“Making this decision was not easy for me,” Westhoff stated in a release provided by the Broncos. “However, this experience has been an eye-opener, reminding me to prioritize my health above all. I believe this team is progressing well, built on a robust foundation and a culture focused on winning. I am thankful to Sean for allowing me to be a part of this esteemed organization, and I extend my best wishes to the Broncos moving forward.”
During his tenure, Westhoff, alongside special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica, has significantly contributed to the Broncos’ performance. Since the beginning of the season, the special teams unit has been recognized as one of the best in the league, with 21 punts successfully downed inside the 20-yard line, including four that were exceptionally close to the goal line.
Nonetheless, Westhoff’s resignation comes at a tough moment for the Broncos, who are reeling from a recent game where a blocked field goal at the last moment led to a disappointing 16-14 defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs.
