Stellantis is initiating a recall of approximately 207,000 Jeep and Dodge SUVs across the United States due to a computer issue that may lead to the failure of key safety features such as the anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control.
This recall specifically targets certain 2018 and 2019 models of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango.
According to documents submitted for the recall, it has been revealed that some SUVs may contain a malfunctioning brake control computer that incorrectly senses brake pressure.
This malfunction can result in the deactivation of crucial safety systems, cause the brake lights to activate inadvertently, and allow the vehicle to shift out of the park position without the driver applying pressure on the brake pedal. As a result, there is a potential risk of the vehicle moving unexpectedly.
Currently, Stellantis is in the process of formulating a solution to this issue. Vehicle owners will receive notification letters beginning Thursday. For any inquiries, they can reach out to Stellantis customer service at (800) 853-1403.
It’s worth noting that these same models experienced a recall in 2022 due to a related issue; however, that previous recall did not encompass concerns regarding the brake lights or the integrity of the antilock brake and electronic stability control systems.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has indicated that vehicles that underwent repairs during that 2022 recall will require further fixes now.
As of mid-October, Stellantis reported that it had received 533 warranty claims linked to this issue, but notably, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries associated with it.
