SAN FRANCISCO — Klay Thompson stepped off the team bus, radiating joy as he made his way back into Chase Center on Tuesday night. He was welcomed by approximately 400 enthusiastic Warriors employees who had lined up to express their admiration and gratitude for the former Golden State star as he headed toward the Dallas locker room.
The staff wore “Captain Klay” hats, a special giveaway to honor the occasion as they celebrated Thompson’s impressive 13-year journey with the franchise, which included two challenging seasons due to injury and a pivotal role in securing four championships for the team.
The Warriors had extended an invitation to all their employees, encouraging them to partake in this warm welcome for Thompson, who made the move to Dallas in July on a three-year contract worth $50 million. At 34 years old, Thompson had endured over two and a half years away from play—missing the entire 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons—while recovering from surgeries on his left knee and right Achilles tendon, returning to the game in January 2022.
Despite the significance of this moment, Thompson aimed to remain humble, although it was undoubtedly emotional for many involved. In recognition of Thompson’s contributions to Golden State, the team planned a “Salute Captain Klay” ceremony prior to the game, honoring his legacy and his tradition of commuting by boat across the bay to attend games.
“This is all staff. It’s unbelievable,” remarked Warriors President and COO Brandon Schneider. “What Klay has meant to our organization and all of us over the last 13 years, including team and individual milestones, his character, and his community involvement, makes it a truly special night.”
