SEATTLE — Washington state Representative Dan Newhouse, one of the two remaining GOP members who voted for the impeachment of former President Donald Trump, successfully secured reelection on Tuesday.
In his pursuit of a sixth term, he overcame a challenge from Jerrod Sessler, who had the backing of Trump himself.
Newhouse, who received endorsements from prominent organizations such as the NRA and Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, opted to largely avoid discussing Trump during his campaign. Instead, he emphasized critical issues such as agriculture and border security in a state renowned for its expansive farmland filled with pastures, orchards, and cereal grain fields, where immigrant labor plays a significant role.
Sessler, a veteran of the Navy, aligned his campaign closely with Trump’s policies. He committed to advocating for robust national security measures, including the establishment of “an impenetrable border.” He also aimed to roll back regulations enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency and similar agencies, while pushing for tariffs and other sanctions against China.
“China’s fixation on global dominance, coupled with its atheistic ideology that discards moral considerations, poses a considerable threat,” Sessler stated in one of the numerous video messages addressing key issues that were shared on his campaign platform.
