DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — On Tuesday, United Nations peacekeepers raised alarms regarding the Israeli military’s actions, which they claim constitute “serious violations” of the cease-fire agreement established with Syria. This warning comes as the Israeli military is engaged in significant construction work along the Alpha Line, which acts as the boundary separating the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from Syria.
The statements from the U.N. Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), an entity that has monitored the area since 1974, followed the release of satellite images that highlighted the extensive works along the border, published in an earlier report. According to UNDOF, the construction activities commenced in July and have occurred alongside the completion of new road infrastructures and what appears to be a buffer zone adjacent to the Gaza Strip’s borders.
Furthermore, the Israeli military has also initiated the demolition of villages in Lebanon, a region where other U.N. peacekeepers have encountered hostile fire. Although tensions have not erupted along the Alpha Line, UNDOF expressed concern that the ongoing construction could escalate regional tensions further.
The organization emphasized that these “serious violations” of the demilitarized zone could provoke increased discord and that the situation is under close observation by UNDOF. As of now, the Israeli military has not provided any comment regarding these allegations, and Syrian officials have refrained from making statements about the ongoing construction activities.
