Berlin’s city officials have initiated a formal campaign on Tuesday to secure a series of NFL games over the next five years, starting from the upcoming season.
The German capital aims to become the third city in Germany to hold regular-season NFL games, following in the footsteps of Munich, which hosted its first game in 2022, and Frankfurt, which hosted an event last year.
The proposed games would take place at the Olympiastadion, a venue that has a rich history, including hosting NFL exhibition matches in the 1990s and accommodating over 74,000 fans. The stadium has also been the site of significant sports events, such as the men’s soccer World Cup final in 2006 and this year’s European Championship.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell mentioned on Saturday that efforts are actively underway to bring NFL games to Berlin, although he noted that this does not exclude returning to other cities like Frankfurt and Munich.
In their statement, Berlin officials expressed hopes for “significant economic added value” through hosting NFL games. They also shared plans to promote flag football in schools, aligning with the sport’s upcoming inclusion in the Olympic program for the 2028 games in Los Angeles.
Interestingly, Berlin was not part of the original group of German cities that sought to host regular-season NFL games when the league first considered expanding its international presence. Initially, Frankfurt, Munich, and Düsseldorf were selected as finalists in 2021 for this opportunity, with Düsseldorf yet to host a game.
In December, NFL team owners approved the decision for the league to facilitate eight international games each season, with this season including matches in London, Munich, and Sao Paulo.
Additionally, one exciting new venue has already been confirmed for next year, as the league will debut in Spain with a game planned for Madrid.
