SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane City Hall was shut down for a period on Monday, leading to the cancellation of a scheduled council meeting due to a potential security threat, officials reported.
A spokesperson for the Spokane Police Department, Officer Daniel Strassenberg, indicated that the threat appeared to be specifically directed at City Hall, prompting the temporary closure of the building. This precautionary measure was part of the response to ensure safety in the area.
In a statement, council spokesperson Lisa Gardner stated that the council meeting was called off as a precautionary step to protect the lawmakers, staff, and the public. The council is collaborating closely with law enforcement to assess the circumstances and implement all necessary safety measures going forward.
Strassenberg also noted that there was no evidence indicating a wider threat to the Spokane community as a whole. Authorities advised the public to avoid the City Hall premises on that day while the situation was being assessed.
Details regarding the specific nature of the security threat have not yet been disclosed, and further information is pending.
