NEW ORLEANS — Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi believed a shift in mindset would help the New Orleans Saints break free from their seven-game losing streak. Rizzi’s strategy focused on embracing the changes that came with a new coaching regime, promoting the concept of a “fresh start.”

“It’s like a new season,” said Rizzi, who stepped in as head coach after the dismissal of Dennis Allen last week. “There wasn’t a significant amount of discussion about the losing streak, but rather about all the changes, which I see as a positive sign.”

Rizzi continued this theme by encouraging his team to adopt a mindset that emphasized a fresh beginning, aiming for a weekly goal of going “1-0.” He noted that reaching this milestone not only lifted the team’s spirits but also benefited the entire organization and its fan base.

In their first game under Rizzi’s leadership, the Saints managed to snap the losing streak with a narrow 20-17 victory over the Falcons. Guard Cesar Ruiz expressed how Rizzi’s approach impacted the locker room culture. “The focus was on winning, on being 1-0 each week. It feels great to get that win—not just to end the slump, but also for Rizzi, who genuinely cares for us and strives to prepare us for success.”

However, Rizzi acknowledged that maintaining this newfound momentum would present a significant challenge. “It’s easier to get everyone on board initially when things seem to be going well, but I want the team to come in every day with the mindset of what’s next,” he explained. “We’re planning to introduce more variations this week to keep everyone engaged.”

One aspect of the Saints’ game that stood out positively was their defense, which ranked among the top third of the league in preventing touchdowns when opposing teams entered or got close to the red zone. Despite allowing a touchdown drive, the Falcons only managed one red zone score, showcasing the Saints’ resilience in critical situations.

On the flip side, the Saints’ defensive front has struggled against the run recently. Following a game where they surrendered 181 rushing yards to Atlanta, they have seen over 122 rushing yards in five out of their last six games, including alarming totals of 277 yards from Tampa Bay and 225 yards from Denver.

A highlight from the victory was wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, whose midseason acquisition proved fruitful. He made three significant receptions for 109 yards and scored two touchdowns. His impact could have been even greater had the Falcons not adjusted their coverage to limit his opportunities after his early success.

On the downside, cornerback Alontae Taylor has faced challenges with officiating due to his aggressive playstyle, resulting in three penalties totaling 34 yards, including one that allowed a first down.

Regarding injuries, the Saints are optimistic about the potential return of center Erik McCoy, who has been sidelined for seven games due to a groin injury. The team waived veteran center Connor McGovern, suggesting McCoy’s possible return after practicing last week. Additionally, linebacker Pete Werner faced a hand injury during the game.

The Saints have notably gone three games without a turnover, a promising statistic as they look ahead.

In their next matchup, the New Orleans Saints will host the Cleveland Browns, and it will mark the return of former Saints quarterback Jameis Winston to the Superdome.
