DETROIT — Dan Campbell, both as an NFL player and coach, has witnessed a multitude of scenarios. However, nothing quite compared to the intense game he experienced on Sunday night.
Despite Jared Goff’s struggle with five interceptions—one more than he had thrown in his first eight games—the Lions managed to clinch a dramatic victory over the Houston Texans, securing a 26-23 win after trailing 23-7 at halftime.
“The chances of winning after committing five turnovers are really low,” Campbell remarked. “This victory was truly a collective effort across all facets of the game.”
The Lions’ kicker, Jake Bates, played a pivotal role, nailing a 58-yard field goal to tie the score in the fourth quarter, followed by a 52-yarder that sealed the win as time ran out on the clock.
This achievement marked the Lions as the first NFL team since the Atlanta Falcons in 2012 to secure a win despite throwing five interceptions in a game.
Campbell praised the defensive performance, highlighting their ability to force the Texans into three field goals during the first half, before completely shutting them out in the second half.
“That’s incredibly challenging for the defense,” Campbell said, “because they’re working hard to prevent touchdowns only for us to throw an interception shortly after. Their effort was monumental, especially considering the two turnovers we generated.”
Veteran cornerback Carlton Davis stood out with two interceptions of C.J. Stroud in the second half, one of which occurred at the critical 3-yard line.
“I remarked to C.D. on Saturday that he could very well be our best addition this season,” Campbell noted. “You have to appreciate a cornerback who can cover, tackle, shut down the run, and deliver two crucial interceptions when we needed them.”
When it comes to what worked, Campbell emphasized the Lions’ run defense, which effectively contained the Texans. While Joe Mixon scored an 8-yard touchdown, he ended the night with a mere 46 yards on 25 carries.
“We recognized that he was our key offensive threat to neutralize,” Campbell said. “He’s a tough runner, constantly pushing, but we managed to contain him.”
On the flip side, Goff had previously gone five games without an interception. Yet, in an unexpected turn, he threw three picks in the first half, followed by two more in the third quarter—turning the ball over shortly after Davis’ interceptions.
“I honestly believed my play wasn’t subpar,” Goff stated. “I could see the field effectively and was delivering solid throws. I’ve dealt with worse situations before, so a couple of unfortunate mistakes weren’t going to deter me.”
Notably, despite the third-quarter interceptions, Goff bounced back, throwing 8-for-13 for 149 yards and a touchdown in the second half.
Bates, who initially kicked at Ford Field for the United Football League’s Michigan Panthers, has since caught the Lions’ attention, notably kicking a 64-yard field goal that was nullified by a timeout—before successfully attempting it again.
After facing issues trusting kickers in critical moments last season, Campbell now relies on Bates, who has become a crucial asset in Detroit’s strong season performance.
Conversely, Jameson Williams began the season with an impressive 12 combined receptions and rushing attempts for 228 yards in the first two games, creating expectations of him emerging as a significant offensive threat. However, he has only garnered 12 more receptions and rushing attempts for 218 yards over the following seven games, including one catch for -4 yards against Minnesota on October 20. Following that, he faced a two-game suspension due to a violation of the league’s performance-enhancing substances policy.
Although he recorded three catches for 53 yards against the Texans, the Lions are in need of him to regain his early-season form.
In terms of injuries, tight end Sam LaPorta exited the game with a shoulder issue, although Campbell does not foresee it being a long-term concern. Offensive tackle Taylor Decker missed the matchup due to a shoulder injury, with Campbell hopeful that both players will return for the upcoming game against Jacksonville.
A noteworthy statistic reflects that the Lions achieved five victories during a stretch of five games, which included tough road contests in Dallas, Minnesota, Green Bay, and Houston, with their lone home game being a win against Tennessee.
Looking ahead, the Lions aim to minimize turnovers and maintain their focus as they face off against the Jaguars, who currently hold a 2-8 record.
